Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Local Government Partnership Program?
The Local Government Partnership Program helps return unclaimed funds to Illinois local governments. The Treasurer’s Office searches the unclaimed property database for funds that may belong to units of local government so those dollars can be returned and used in local communities.
What is unclaimed money?
Unclaimed money may include vendor credit balances, vendor refunds, uncashed insurance checks, uncashed fee checks, and other funds owed to your unit of government. These funds are held by businesses, financial institutions, or government agencies covered by the (765 ILCS 1026/) Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act.
How long will it take to get our money?
Completing the claim form usually takes less than 15 minutes. Processing time depends on the type of property and the amount being claimed, but the Treasurer’s Office reviews claims as quickly as possible.
What happens if we do not claim the funds?
If your local government does not claim the money, the property will be listed on the iCash website. If the funds remain unclaimed for five years, they are transferred to the State’s General Revenue Fund.
Can we help return money to our community?
Yes. Local governments are important partners in helping return unclaimed money to Illinois residents. The Treasurer’s Office currently holds more than $5 billion in unclaimed property, and about 1 in 4 people who search the database find money owed to them.
The Treasurer’s Office can also provide current county-level data and outreach materials to help your local government promote iCash in your community.
