Money Match Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about the Illinois State Treasurer’s Money Match program, including why you received a check and how the program works.
Why did the State of Illinois send me a check?
You received a check because the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office identified unclaimed property in your name and verified enough information to return it through the Money Match program.
What is the Enhanced Money Match program?
The Enhanced Money Match program allows the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office to return some unclaimed property automatically. The office uses unclaimed property records and information from other state agencies to verify ownership and mail checks to eligible owners.
Is this a scam?
No. Money Match is an official program of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. If you want to verify a letter or check, call the Unclaimed Property Division at 217-785-6998 or email unclaimedproperty@illinoistreasurer.gov.
Why am I getting this money?
This is not free money. It is your money, but it may have been forgotten or left unclaimed. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office holds unclaimed property until it can be returned to the rightful owner.
How can I cash my check?
You may be able to cash or deposit your check in several ways, including at your bank or credit union, through mobile banking, at some ATMs that accept check deposits, or at retail stores that offer check-cashing services. Your own bank or credit union is often the easiest option.
What is unclaimed property?
Unclaimed property is money or property that has had no owner activity for a period of time, usually three to five years. It may include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance payments, stock dividends, and other assets.
What is I-CASH?
I-CASH is the Illinois Treasurer’s online unclaimed property search tool. It allows people to search for additional money or property that may still be waiting to be claimed.
Could I have more unclaimed money?
Yes. Even if you received a Money Match check, you may still have other unclaimed property that was not included. You can search for more through I-CASH and through MissingMoney.com.
